WASHINGTON (AP) - A man suspected in an armed carjacking died during a police chase after the car crashed and burst into flames.

Local outlets report 48-year-old Derrick Foster was pronounced dead at the scene early Tuesday morning after Prince George’s County police extinguished the flames and pulled him from the car. Police say Foster had stolen a woman’s car at gunpoint, and was later spotted by a patrol officer around 10 miles (16 kilometers) away.

The chase lasted 30 seconds before Foster crashed into two utility poles. Police say Foster had turned off the car’s lights to conceal himself from the officer’s view.

Police recovered a gun from Foster. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
