HOOKSETT, New Hampshire (AP) - Police in New Hampshire say a man shot and killed a dog that jumped through the open window of a vehicle to attack another dog at a rest stop.

Police say the incident started when a large dog inside a vehicle broke free from its owners after seeing a smaller dog pass at the Hooksett rest stop off Interstate 93 on Wednesday.

The Concord Monitor (https://bit.ly/2sqgS5n ) reports the owner of the smaller dog fired a shot from close range after unsuccessfully attempting to free his own dog. The larger dog died.

The dog owned by the shooter was taken to a veterinarian’s office for treatment to injuries that did not appear life threatening. The incident was still under investigation on Thursday.
