CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - An inmate at a maximum security prison in Maryland was stabbed six times but is in stable condition.

The Cumberland Times-News reports the 35-year-old inmate was stabbed Wednesday night at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Gerard Shields says the inmate told officers he had been stabbed in the head and torso. The man was then taken to a hospital.

Shields says three suspects have been identified and an investigation is ongoing.

Shields says the victim is serving a 60-year sentence for kidnapping and began serving the prison term in 2012.
