DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) - Anirban Lahiri played so well Sunday that he wished he could have kept playing.
“I would have liked maybe four or five holes more, actually,” Lahiri said after shooting a 7-under 65 to tie for second in the Memorial, three shots behind Jason Dufner. “Because I was playing really good. And I could have probably made a couple more birdies. But like I say, I’m really happy with the way I played. I felt really relaxed out there.”
The Indian star had seven birdies in a bogey-free round. He got better as the tournament progressed, following an opening 74 with rounds of 70 and 69.
“There are holes out here you have to respect and you try to make those 10-, 15-footers and if you do you get a score together,” Lahiri said. “And I think that’s what I did over the weekend and just tried to stay away from the bad spots.”
MEMORIAL WEATHER: Central Ohio weather can change so fast in the late spring that rain and storms are always likely during the Memorial. It’s almost expected.
On Sunday, rain led to two 77-minute delays, with some players playing part of back nine at Muirfield Village through a steady downpour.
After three beautiful days and a dry course, the rain rolled in Sunday, delaying play in the late afternoon. Play resumed, but was stopped again with winner Jason Dufner and Rickie Fowler on the 18th fairway.
It was worse in 2016 when the tournament was stopped on both Saturday and Sunday, the first weather delays in three years. Before that, weather led to delays in seven of eight Memorials.
FIRST ACE: Harold Varner III had his first hole-in-one - and reporters got sandwiches.
The 26-year-old Varner aced the 164-yard eighth hole.
He tweeted: “First hole in one ever. It could not have happened at a better time.”
Varner finished with 2-under 70 in a round that included a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys. He was 4 under for the tournament and bought a pile of sub sandwiches for those working in the media room.
