GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - Two suspects will not face the death penalty when they go on trial for the shooting death of a North Carolina teenager.

The Gaston Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/2sKLWgt) the two suspects, a 17-year-ld and 18-year-old Darvon Malik Fletcher, appeared in Superior Court in Gaston County on Monday, where their bonds were set at $2 million apiece. Before the hearing, they had held been in the county jail without bond.

Mount Holly Police Chief Don Roper said in April that it appeared the shooting of 14-year-old Taylor Sotera Smith wasn’t random because Fletcher and the victim were familiar with each other. Officers said Smith was shot multiple times and died at a local hospital.

The mother of the 17-year-old is jailed on a $1 million bond for helping her son elude arrest.
