GREAT FALLS, Va. (AP) - A missing dog who has been reunited with its family was under their feet the entire time.

News outlets report Banx the 60-pound (27-kilogram) pointer was trapped under his family’s deck for two days before Fairfax County firefighters located and freed him Thursday.

His family had told the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department that they thought they could hear their missing dog under the deck. In a press release, the department says rescuers initially couldn’t find any evidence that the dog was under the deck, which had less than 3 inches (76 millimeters) of crawlspace, but they eventually found the dog after removing decking and gravel.

Banx was dehydrated and slightly bruised, but overall fine. Firefighters assume he became lodged after pursuing a small animal and dug himself in.
