NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities have charged a former employee of a New York City district attorney’s office with stealing more than $50,000 from the agency and spending it on personal purchases.
The Richmond County District Attorney’s Office says 43-year-old William Nelson, of Staten Island, was charged Tuesday with using the agency’s credit cards over an 11-year period for travel expenses, sporting events, memorabilia, comics, video games, survival gear and other merchandise.
DA Michael McMahon says Nelson was hired as his office’s procurement director in 2005, when Daniel Donovan, now a member of Congress, served as district attorney. After McMahon took office, Nelson was shifted to a different position in May 2016 and resigned in December.
It couldn’t be learned from prosecutors if Nelson has a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
