MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - The son of a man who was killed inside his New Jersey home has been charged with murder.

Essex County prosecutors say 19-year-old Alexander Reason also faces weapons charges in the death of his 53-year-old father, Wesley Reason. He will remain jailed pending a detention hearing, and it wasn’t known if he’s retained an attorney.

Police responded to the family’s Maplewood home around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday for a reported assault. They found Wesley Reason unresponsive and he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities say other family members also lived in the home. But it wasn’t clear whether anyone else was in the home when the attack occurred.

A motive for the assault has not been disclosed, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
