NEW YORK (AP) - Eight people face charges in a scheme to steal checks and money orders from mailboxes in the Bronx.

Federal prosecutors say the defendants used illicitly obtained mail box keys or inserted homemade mail theft devices into street corner mailboxes.

Five of the defendants were arrested Wednesday. Two suspects remain at large and an eighth will appear for arraignment later this week. They’re being charged with bank fraud and mail theft conspiracies.

Prosecutors say that since 2015 there have been over 50 arrests for mail theft in the Claremont Park area involving over $750,000 in stolen checks and money orders.
