CRESTLINE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man has been charged with holding a woman captive in his Southern California home and torturing her for two days.

Court records show Monte Wayne Shultz pleaded not guilty Wednesday to torture and corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies went to Shultz’s home in Crestline on Feb. 27 for a welfare check. They say they found a woman with “traumatic injuries” to her head and face. The woman told deputies Schultz had beaten and tortured her for two days.

Authorities say she was hospitalized in critical condition.
