CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A New York man has again pleaded guilty to recklessly driving charges stemming from a crash that killed a friend.
Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2nd9oB2) that 21-year-old Brandon Charles, of Wheatley Heights, pleaded guilty Thursday in a Suffolk County court to second-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors say Charles’ speeding was responsible for a 2014 accident in Melville that killed 19-year-old Carla Vanessa Flores, who was riding in the car.
Charles first pleaded guilty in September under the pretense that he was eligible for a special nine-month program for young offenders. He was later deemed ineligible because his crime resulted in a death.
A judge allowed Charles to rescind his guilty plea and re-start the case with the new information. He pleaded guilty again.
Charles will serve three to nine years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 4.
