LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Charges have been dropped against a former Las Cruces police sergeant accused of providing drugs to a woman in return for sex.

Charges were dismissed March 1 against 32-year-old Alexander Smith, who resigned last June amid an investigation into allegations that he had given methamphetamine to a woman while wearing his police uniform and badge.

The Las Cruces Sun-News (https://goo.gl/9GWy9D ) reports that defense attorney Jess Lilley said dismissal was appropriate because Smith didn’t commit a crime. He also said Smith is “ready to move on with his life and career.”

Court records indicate charges of trafficking in a controlled substance and conspiracy to commit trafficking were dismissed because “witnesses necessary for the prosecution of the case refuse to cooperate.”

Smith had pleaded not guilty.
