COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Yearlando Reed came off the bench for 17 points as Fairmont Heights won its first state title in 36 years with a 65-52 victory over Edmondson-Westside in the Maryland Class 1A championship Saturday.
Fairmont Heights (17-8) last won the title in 1981 after capturing seven in 18 years. The Hornets broke open a close game by scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Darren Lucas-White (15 points) and Kimani Benjamin (14 points) helped after Fairmont Heights held a 44-43 lead heading into the fourth.
Reed shot 7-for-8 from the field, including a three-pointer during a 7-0 run to start the fourth.
The Prince George’s County school also scored the game’s final eight points.
Edmondson-Westside (17-8), from Baltimore, began the game with a 10-1 run and led 30-28 at halftime but struggled in the second half.
Frankye Duckett led the Red Storm with 18 points.
