LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) - An inmate’s complaint has prompted the chief prosecutor in Rockbridge County and Lexington to request a state police probe of the Rockbridge Regional Jail.

News outlets report that Commonwealth’s Attorney Christopher Billias sent a press release late Friday afternoon announcing his request.

Billias declined to elaborate on the issues involved, but said there is an active criminal investigation. In his news release, he said a preliminary inquiry prompted by an inmate’s complaint “has revealed issues at the jail that require further investigation.”

The jail’s superintendent, John Higgins, declined comment Friday. Higgins also serves as vice chairman of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors.
