BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Oil and Gas Division officials say about 42,000 gallons of saltwater spilled from a tank battery about five miles northwest of Maxbass.

Officials say the incident happened when a pump failed Friday and caused tanks to overflow. They say the spill has been contained.

Saltwater is an unwanted byproduct of oil production and is considered an environmental hazard by the state. It is many times saltier than sea water and can easily kill vegetation exposed to it.

A state inspector has been sent to the site and will monitor additional clean-up.
