COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - A mother in eastern Mississippi says her teenage son is a “big hero” for rescuing his grandmother from a house fire.

LaQuita Green tells the Commercial-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/2mTzwTN ) that she was she was in Texas filling out an apartment application when her son called and said their home in Columbus was on fire.

The 15-year-old, Jaylon Smith, had just gotten home from school Wednesday when he saw smoke billowing in the back of the house. His maternal grandmother is a stroke patient who uses a wheelchair, so Smith rolled her outside and called 911.

Then, he called his mother to tell her about the fire.

The home was heavily damaged and the family lost most of their belongings, including photos. They are now living with relatives in Texas.
