ASHEBORO, N.C. (AP) - An Asheboro man has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run killing of a Liberty woman.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says in a statement that 20-year-old Isreal Bernal Velasquez was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony hit-and-run.

Troopers responded around 8:30 p.m. on March 5 to a hit-and-run fatality on N.C. 49 outside of Liberty. Troopers say 35-year-old Diana Lynn Rego-Lockamy was hit by a Honda Civic that fled the scene. Rego-Lockamy died from her injuries.

Through forensic tests and interviews, Troopers say they were able to identify Velasquez as a suspect.

It’s unclear if Velasquez has an attorney.
