LAKE WORTH, Fla. (AP) - A South Florida man who was 18 years old when he fatally shot a girl he was romantically involved with has been sentenced to life in prison.

Local media outlets report that 23-year-old Brandon Santos was sentenced Wednesday. He was convicted earlier this month of first-degree murder.

Authorities say Santos had a girlfriend and a child when he started dating 16-year-old Emili Sineace in 2012. Sineace convinced Santos to give her money, falsely claiming her non-existent twin babies were his. Santos testified that Sineace threated his real infant son, and that’s why he killed her in front of her mother’s home in September 2012.

Prosecutors say there’s no evidence that Sineace threatened the child.
