BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Law enforcement and health professionals will discuss possibly creating safe injection sites for drug users in Chittenden County in order to combat the opiate crisis.

State’s Attorney Sarah George announced this week the creation of a commission to study the topic. She says other places already have similar sites.

The idea follows proposed legislation by a Burlington representative to create safe spaces for drug users. The spaces would feature supervision, clean needles and overdose-reversal drugs, as well as access to treatment.

State Rep. Selene Colburn tells WPTZ-TV that safe injection sites are worth considering. Colburn says they get drug users into treatment, save lives and reduce public needle discard.
