CALIPATRIA, Calif. (AP) - California officials say an inmate is dead after he was attacked by two other convicts at a prison near the Mexican border.
Calipatria State Prison guards say they recovered two inmate-made weapons used in the fatal attack Friday afternoon on 53-year-old Fred Archuleta.
He had been imprisoned since 2006, serving a life sentence from San Bernardino County for conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of a firearm by an ex-felon and criminal gang activity.
Both suspects are already serving life sentences for first-degree murder. One is from Riverside County and the other from San Bernardino County.
Their names were being kept secret during the investigation.
The prison holds about 3,800 inmates minimum- and maximum-security inmates 140 miles east of San Diego.
