VESTAL, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say the person killed in a fire at an upstate New York motel earlier this week has been identified as the longtime owner of the business.

Police in Vestal in Broome County announced Thursday that 79-year-old Dhansukh Patel managed to get his wife safely out of the building during Tuesday’s early morning fire but was unable to escape.

Patel and his wife lived above the office of the two-story Skylark Motel, located outside Binghamton. Six guests made it out safely. One suffered minor smoke inhalation.

The Press & Sun-Bulletin reports (https://press.sn/2mQp7pS ) Patel, known to friends as Dick, was a native of India who had owned the motel since the 1980s.

The blaze left the building heavily damaged. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
