NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A man suspected of several shootings and robberies in Newark who escaped from police is back in custody after a chase through five towns.

Police say they were tipped off on Wednesday that 22-year-old Rajahn Smith was driving a stolen car. Officers pursued the vehicle through Newark, East Orange, Belleville, Bloomfield and Irvington before it was abandoned.

Bloomfield police apprehended Smith and a passenger who was with him.



Smith is charged with escape and the passenger is charged with receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Smith escaped from Human Service police in Trenton.

It’s not known if he has a lawyer.
