SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison for swindling a Virginia couple out of at least $100,000 while entrusted with their horse riding facility in Massachusetts.
The Salem News reports (https://bit.ly/2ngJ7ki ) Judge James Lang sentenced Jeffrey Haywood on Tuesday for what Lang calls “a protracted and extended course of larcenous conduct.”
Haywood worked at the Canter Brook Equestrian Center in Hamilton, Massachusetts.
Records indicate the owners sent him more than $1 million over the years, some of which was meant to run the center. Prosecutors say Dawson stole $100,000 by forging one of the owner’s signatures on a mortgage.
Haywood, who the couple knew as Jerry Dawson, was convicted of larceny and forgery.
He says he’s trying to repay the money.
