STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - Jury selection in the trial of a Stamford man charged with fatally stabbing and robbing a city cab driver has started.

Shota Mekoshvili is charged with murder in the August 2014 death of Mahomed Kamal.

Prosecutors say the suspect and the cabbie knew each other and believe the killing was motivated by robbery. Witnesses have said Kamal had as much as $500 on him the day he was killed.

Police say when he was arrested, the suspect had cuts on his nose, forehead and right temple, believed to have been caused by a metal flashlight Kamal wielded to protect himself.

The Stamford Advocate (https://bit.ly/2nLtpkU ) reports that Mekoshvili’s attorney, Norm Pattis, has said he plans to present a self-defense argument to the jury.

Testimony is scheduled to start April 26.
