SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to life in prison in connection with the 2014 southwestern Missouri shooting death of a 21-year-old man.

The Springfield News-Leader (https://sgfnow.co/2o6VJyO ) reports that a Greene County judge imposed the life term on Brian S. Jones for his conviction of second-degree murder, along with a consecutive 10-year sentence for second-degree assault.

Forty-two-year-old Jones was found guilty in December in the death of Charles Cortez, who authorities said was killed after a drug deal.

On Tuesday, a prosecutor asked a judge to impose the harshest possible punishment on Jones, saying Jones committed eight felonies since 1999.

Jones’ attorney countered that his client has had a “horrible, horrible meth addiction for most of his life,” and this his criminal past was mostly non-violent.
