SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A Spartanburg County man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a man while robbing him and shooting his girlfriend in the head as she tried to escape.

Solicitor Barry Barnette says a jury found Jason Cash, 25, of Inman guilty Thursday of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and first-degree burglary. Judge Derham Cole sentenced Cash to life in prison without parole, plus a consecutive 30-year sentence on the attempted murder conviction.

Prosecutors say Cash and a co-conspirator shot Carey Mauldin, 40, multiple times after breaking into his home near Chesnee about 5 a.m. on May 22, 2015. They also bound the head, wrists and ankles of Mauldin’s girlfriend, Casey Scruggs of Inman, with duct tape. She managed to get to a neighbor’s for help after the shooters fled in Mauldin’s car.

News outlets report Mauldin was found dead on his couch.

Cash and Steven Lewis, 31, of Greensboro, North Carolina, were arrested in Greensboro days later. Lewis’ case is pending. He faces the same charges as Cash.

Scruggs was among those testifying against Cash.
