BARRE, Vt. (AP) - Police say a Vermont motorist who blamed a stuck floor mat for losing control and killing a pedestrian was actually huffing before the deadly crash.

Police tell WCAX-TV that Jon Stone was inhaling chemicals to get high before crossing three lanes of oncoming traffic on Main Street in Barre. He was due in Washington County Court on Friday to face a charge of gross negligent operation. It was unclear if he has a lawyer.

Three pedestrians were hurt on Feb. 24. One pedestrian, Brian Harris, died from his injuries.

WCAX reports that the 28-year-old Stone of Barre originally told police a stuck floor mat was to blame. The crash remains under investigation.
