UNION CITY, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a wind-swept fire that started in an apartment building has killed a 2-year-old child and severely damaged a nearby church in Union City.

The boy’s father was seriously burned in the fire, which broke out around 1 a.m. Saturday on Summit Avenue. But authorities say it’s not yet clear what sparked the blaze.

Strong winds helped the fire spread quickly from the apartment building to another structure and then to the steeple of Saints Joseph and Michael Catholic church. The blaze displaced about 50 people who lived in the area, and they were receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The child killed in the fire apparently lived in the building where the blaze started. His name and his father’s name have not been released.
