TROOPERS: MAN FACES DUI CHARGES AFTER HITTING 8 SERVICEMEN
The crash occurred around 8 p.m. Saturday on Perdido Key, which is near Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle. Eric Watt is charged with DUI involving serious bodily injury and officials say he may face additional charges. Troopers said in a news release that the eight men were taken by ambulances to area hospital with various injuries. Only one, 24-year-old Jordan Lo, remained hospitalized Sunday.
AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER ADAM PUTNAM RUNNING FOR FLORIDA GOVERNOR
Putnam filed his paperwork on Monday to seek the seat being vacated by Republican Gov. Rick Scott due to term limits. Putnam was first elected in 2010 after serving five terms in Congress, where he was one of the highest ranking Republican members of the U.S. House. He was first elected to the Legislature when he was 22.
RESISTING CHARGE DROPPED FOR MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING OFFICER
Prosecutors dropped a charge of resisting law enforcement officer without violence against Markeith Loyd on Friday. His case prompted a legal skirmish between the state attorney in Orlando and Florida’s governor. The charge stemmed from Loyd’s January arrest following a weeklong manhunt after the fatal shooting of Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton. He is charged with killing her.
BULLET GRAZED GIRL’S HEAD DURING BIRTHDAY PARTY SLEEPOVER
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says the girl was sleeping on a couch when the shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday. Investigators say the homeowner’s 11-year-old nephew who suffers from a mental illness shot the gun. He is under a 72-hour mental evaluation. Officials say the bullet grazed the child, went through the couch and the living room wall. The girl was taken to a hospital but her injury is not thought to be life-threatening.
FACULTY, STUDENTS RAISE $25,000 FOR PULSE SCHOLARSHIPS
The idea of raising money for scholarships began as an employee giving campaign. Many employees opted for payroll deductions to grow the fund after seven Valencia College students were among the 49 killed during the June 12 shooting at the nightclub. Soon students and community members got involved in the effort.
