Sen. Bill Cassidy said Monday the final Republican health care bill will have protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
The Louisiana Republican was responding to a question on CNN about whether the House bill goes far enough in protecting those with higher health care costs, such as those with pre-existing conditions.
“If you take that they will have a high risk pool and in the high risk pool you would take care of those with pre-existing conditions, I suppose advocates for the bill would say that’s their guarantee,” he said.
Mr. Cassidy said President Trump may want more protections in the final Republican bill.
“I think the president just said that he expects the final bill to take care of those with pre-existing conditions,” he said. “The House bill is still a work in progress. I’ve spoke in the last several days both to a member of the Freedom Caucus and to a member of the Tuesday Group, and they both recognize it is a work in progress.”
The moderate Tuesday Group and the conservative Freedom Caucus have warred over the House bill and its various revisions. The Freedom Caucus has said they support the current revision due to the option for states to opt out of some mandates. Many members of the Tuesday Group still do not support the revision.
