RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Two river otters are making Richmond their new home.
Local news media outlets report that Maymont’s Nature Center has received two new otters from Louisiana. Visitors will get to see the otters next week.
The otters were deemed “nuisances” by authorities in Louisiana after they were caught raiding crawfish farms.
Buz Bireline is director of habitats and the nature center at Maymont. He tells The Richmond Times Dispatch that the newest additions are wild otters so they’re “really shy.”
The new male otter is named Louis. That’s a nod to his home state and jazz musician Louis Armstrong. Maymont plans to ask the public’s help to pick a name for the new female otter.
Maymont’s longtime otters Neptune and Pandora died last year.
