LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) - A baby sitter has been convicted of second-degree murder and assault in the death of a 5-month-old boy left in her care last year in Los Angeles County.

The child was hospitalized in March 2016 after deputies responded to a Lancaster home following reports of a baby not breathing. The infant was treated for head trauma and bruising of the upper torso and died four days later.

Deputies arrested Brittany Ingrassi, a friend of the child’s father who was babysitting at the time of the incident.

Her attorney contended at trial that the injuries were caused by a dog owned by the baby’s family. A jury returned a guilty verdict on Tuesday.

The District Attorney’s Office said that Ingrassi faces 25 years to life in state prison. Sentencing is set for June 2.
