PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A jury verdict in Multnomah County means the mother of a 23-year-old woman who killed herself won’t get any damages from the doctor and social worker who treated her daughter.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports Thursday (https://bit.ly/2qwrqDA) that Jacqueline Mahoney bought a gun and shot herself in a hotel room after she stopped her bipolar medication.
Her mother, Kazuko Gardner, argued that her daughter’s psychiatrist and social worker knew she was suicidal and had a gun and should have told her family.
Defense attorneys said Dr. Marvin Fickle and social worker Jennifer Shay would have violated laws on doctor-patient confidentiality if they had told Mahoney’s parents.
The jury found Mahoney was 58 percent at fault for her death, so Gardner will get none of the $1.5 million she sought.
