LACONIA, N.H. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to at least nine years in prison for stealing nearly $410,000 from his elderly father in New Hampshire.

The attorney general’s office said Thursday in the months before his 79-year-old father died in 2010, Keith Fitzgerald took advantage of the authority conveyed to him as power of attorney to siphon over $800,000 of his father’s money into new and secret bank accounts without his father’s knowledge. Some of those accounts were titled to a nonexistent trust naming Fitzgerald the sole trustee.

Prosecutors say Fitzgerald used the money for his personal debts and settling a lawsuit. He was convicted in March.

Fitzgerald, who was sentenced in Belknap County Superior Court, has to make a good faith effort to pay the money back.
