NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Port of New Orleans’ Harbor Police Department has officially started bicycle patrols on the Mississippi Riverfront.

Media outlets report that the new patrols began Thursday and cover about two miles of the riverfront, from the French Market to Mardi Gras World.

Harbor Police Chief Robert Hecker says several from Harbor police were recently certified as bicycle patrol officers. Port officials worked with the Audubon Nature Institute, French Market Corp. and other entities to implement the change.

The section of the riverfront to be patrolled draws locals and tourists as the site of various festivals, like French Quarter Fest. However the area has also been the site of violent crime, like sexual assaults and armed robberies.
