SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah is raising its parking rates in the downtown area.

The Savannah City Council on Thursday approved a plan to double parking rates to $2 per hour, extend weekday enforcement hours from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and charge for parking during those hours on Saturdays.

The Savannah Morning News reports (https://bit.ly/2q8QQ9k ) that the changes apply to spaces north of Liberty Street.

City officials say it’s part of an effort to free up more high-demand parking downtown.

Savannah Alderman Julian Miller said the increased rates and extended enforcement times were needed because it has become too inconvenient for residents and visitors to park.

The newspaper reports that the rate increases and new enforcement times are expected to be implemented in January.
