PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) - The city of Portsmouth has picked a new police chief.
The job has been offered to 58-year-old Robert Merner, the assistant chief of the Seattle Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau. Merner also served in the Boston Police Department for 28 years.
The Portsmouth Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2qDeQlK ) that a contract is pending for Merner. He will replace Chief David Mara, whose contract expires in July.
The city’s police commission chose Merner from six finalists, citing his “comprehensive experience and progressive community policing philosophy.”
Merner said it’s “an amazing honor” to be offered the job and said he looks forward to returning to New England.
