GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) - A defense lawyer says she’ll challenge a finding that her client is fit to stand trial for the fatal stabbing of a stranger in an upstate New York supermarket.
Forty-two-year-old Andrew Goodenough of New Windsor faces charges of second-degree murder and other offenses for the June 2016 death of 35-year-old Michael Kohus of Highland Falls.
Prosecutors say Kohus was shopping in the produce section of a supermarket when Goodenough walked up behind him and stabbed him in the neck with a utility knife.
Goodenough appeared in Orange County Court on Tuesday. The Middletown Times Herald-Record (https://bit.ly/2rdiym5 ) reports that his lawyer, Donalda Gillies, will challenge findings by psychologists that Goodenough is fit for trial.
Judge Craig Brown said he’ll schedule a competency hearing.
Goodenough is jailed on $1 million bail.
