President Trump on Thursday condemned as a “witch hunt” the appointment of a Justice Department special counsel to investigate his campaign associates’ alleged collusion with Russia.

“This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!” Mr. Trump tweeted the day after former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III was selected to lead the probe.

“With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed!” Mr. Trump tweeted earlier Thursday.

Immediately after Mr. Mueller’s appointment was announced Wednesday, Mr. Trump struck a more measured tone in a statement released by the White House.

“As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know – there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity,” he said in the statement. “I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.”

The FBI has been investigating since last summer allegations of ties between Trump campaign officials and Russian spies that meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Officials have repeatedly said that no evidence so far has been found to support the accusations.
