AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after an inmate was found hanged in a county jail in South Carolina.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton told local media outlets that 36-year-old Adam Crow of Trenton was found hanged in his cell Tuesday evening.

Sheriff’s Capt. Nick Gallam said medical personnel at the jail tried to save Crow. Emergency medical workers arrived and Crow was pronounced dead shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Crow had been arrested earlier Tuesday by the South Carolina Highway Patrol on charges of driving under the influence, disorderly conduct and several other traffic violations.

The State Law Enforcement Division is assisting with the investigation.
