VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Mayor George Flaggs has good and bad news about the city’s water situation: the water could be back on as early as 10 p.m. Friday, but officials say it won’t be safe to drink.

Flaggs told multiple media outlets Friday that city officials expect repairs to be completed to a massive water main break by that time.

Flaggs said workers believe a gasket may have been the cause of the leak that forced the city’s Water Treatment Plant to shut down water service Wednesday. The city then declared a water emergency affecting more than 29,000 residents.

Though they plan to turn the city pumps on, Flaggs says the city will be under a boil-water notice until the system is brought back up to full pressure and the water is tested.
