BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - About 10,000 senior athletes are headed to Birmingham for a major sporting event, and organizers are trying to recruit 3,000 volunteers to help stage the competition.

The National Senior Games begins in the state’s largest city on June 2, with competitions scheduled at more than a dozen venues over two weeks.

Participants will compete in 19 sports from track and field to cycling to bowling, and organizers are looking for people to help with score-keeping, timing and checking in athletes.

Volunteer coordinator Abby Lutzenkirchen says officials have been trying to recruit volunteers for more than a year, but most will likely sign up in the final two weeks before the competition begins.

The games are staged by the National Senior Games Association. They’ve been held every two years since 1987.
