HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston lawyer specializing in lawsuits against consumers for old debts is set for trial Monday on a lawsuit alleging he uses deceptive trade and debt collection practices.

The Houston Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/2rqCylg ) hundreds of consumers weren’t aware of any financial problems until their bank accounts and debit cards were frozen because of Joseph Onwuteaka. The Texas attorney general’s lawsuit says more than half of the 1,500 lawsuits Onwuteaka and his businesses have filed in Harris County are against consumers who either don’t live or didn’t sign loan agreements there.

Consumer protection laws require debt collection lawsuits be filed in either the county where the person lives or where the loan documents were signed.

Onwuteaka contends the suit should be dismissed and that debtors aren’t consumers under Texas law.
