COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The acting director of South Carolina’s alcohol and drug treatment agency will officially take its helm.

Gov. Henry McMaster on Tuesday named Sara Goldsby to lead the Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services. She’s been acting director since Bob Toomey retired last August.

Goldsby was previously an agency consultant in the fight against opioid abuse.

She is credited for securing a $3.2 million federal grant that provided law enforcement with the anti-overdose drug naloxone. She wrote the agency’s application and procedures for the drug’s use. A 2015 state law allowed officers and firefighters to carry and use the drug on someone who is overdosing.

A Wyoming native, Goldsby holds masters’ degrees in social work and public health from the University of South Carolina.

The Senate must confirm her.
