RUSSELL, Ky. (AP) - The Russell City Council has passed an ordinance that would ban skateboarding on all public rights of way and property.

The Daily Independent reports (https://bit.ly/2qgoGW6) the ordinance was passed by the council with a 5-0 vote, with one abstention. According to the ordinance, anyone caught skateboarding on public sidewalks, streets or parking lots will face a citation. Police will confiscate the skateboard, and owners can retrieve them through a court order from a Greenup County judge.

Mayor Bill Hopkins says they’re concerned about the safety of young skateboarders who skate in treacherous areas.

Councilman Butch Meadows, who abstained from the final vote, says it’s pretty harsh to tell skaters they can’t ride anywhere.

The skateboard ordinance takes effect June 1.
