MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s two United States senators are decrying President Donald Trump’s proposed budget for next year that they say slashes programs for needy Americans across the country.
U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, says rural America, including Vermont, is “missing in action” in the president’s proposed budget. Leahy says it eliminates key investments in rural communities and leaves them without federal support in critical areas.
Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders called the budget “immoral” and said it would cause an enormous amount of pain for the most vulnerable people in the United States.
Trump’s $4.1 trillion budget proposal proposes to eliminate the deficit in a decade while protecting Social Security and Medicare. But to achieve balance, the budget proposal calls for sharp cuts in a variety of programs for the poor.
