BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - The Biloxi City Council held a workshop to discuss the mayor’s plans to turn the former Beauvoir Elementary School into a service center and shelter for homeless people.
The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2qPbH1b) Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich said the city plans to work with agencies to provide services to the homeless at Tuesday’s workshop.
F. Cliff Kirkland, Biloxi’s civic innovation and development officer, says when the council agrees to lease the school the administration can determine expenses.
Councilman George Lawrence asked who will pay for medical care for the homeless.
Biloxi Police Chief John Miller says the department spends up to $350,000 on salaries for officers to deal with the homeless problem and if the proposed center could help half the people on the street there wouldn’t be a problem.
