SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah man convicted of killing a sheriff’s deputy with an assault rifle will appeal the verdict.
Court records show 44-year-old Roberto Roman filed a notice of appeal Tuesday. He was sentenced to life plus 80 years in prison last week after being convicted of killing a law enforcement officer.
Roman has testified it wasn’t him but the deputy’s brother who fired the fatal shots after the pair smoked methamphetamine together.
But prosecutors say Roman killed Josie Greathouse Fox and tried to blame her brother Ryan Greathouse after he died of a drug overdose in 2010.
Prosecutors say Greathouse bought drugs from Roman, but left before his sister pulled over Roman’s car.
A jury acquitted Roman of a state murder charge in 2012.
