SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Big changes may soon come to a Utah library system.
Reports say the Salt Lake City Library board voted to get rid of late fees on Monday, a move which cause the library system to lose $75,000 next year. Library officials determined that the fees disproportionately impacted low-income library visitors.
The library charges people 20 cents per day for overdue books and 50 cents per day for movies. The fees will be phased out July 1.
Library officials are hoping that time saved by eliminating late fees will offset the revenue loss.
At the same, library officials are seeking a 21 percent property tax increase. Reports say if approved, the increase would cost the average Salt Lake City homeowner about $20 extra a year. Hearings on the library’s budget proposal will be held in June.
