LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky officials say a juvenile detention facility where a teenager died will close next month.
Officials say Lincoln Village in Elizabethtown is slated to close as part of a statewide plan to consolidate facilities. Juvenile justice officials are working to reduce the number of youths placed in detention centers which has left many facilities operating below capacity.
For examples, Juvenile Justice statistics show Lincoln Village recently had about 20 juveniles incarcerated there, though it has a capacity of 44.
WDRB-TV (https://bit.ly/2qWU3Hj) reports a statement from the agency about the closure did not mention 16-year-old Gynnya McMillian, who died at the facility in 2016.
An investigation found that the teen died of a heart condition, though a review found that facility employees didn’t conduct required bed checks.
